Pathfinder Animal Item SlotsSomething that has come up in conversations with folks I game with, as well as some other friends, is that after a while, magic items in DnD don’t feel magical anymore. Everyone and their brother after a point has a +2 weapon, +1 armor and a cloak of resistance, in addition to a slew of other magical goodies.
While the game’s math seems set up to do this on purpose (things start to get out of whack if the PCs don’t have a certain plus level of weapons and armor at certain levels), it does kinda make magic items feel, well, like common technology.
I’ve been brainstorming, trying to fix this, and while I think I have something in mind for fixing the ’plus problem’, I am still trying to figure out how to handle magical items overall.
So far, what I am considering, is that PCs and important NPCs are ’touched by Fate’, and as such, get bonuses to reflect this. At level 3, they get their first ’fate point’, which can be placed in either Combat, Saves, or Defense. Combat gives them a +1 bonus to hit and damage, Saves gives a +1 on all saves, and Defense gives a +1 AC. At level 4 they get another point, to put into either one of the two ’slots’ they did not choose at level 3. They get a further point at level 7, one at 8, one at 11, one at 12, one at 15 and 16, and lastly at 19 and 20. No one area can have more points allocated than their character level divided by 4 (so maximums of +5 in any one area).
This seems to solve the need to have +3 armor and weapons, and the saving throw items.
However, what throws me off, is how to handle spells that give similar bonuses. Do I let things stack? Not stack? What about masterwork weapons (not really a huge issue, I think, but still something to consider).
And what about magic items in general. Since your weapons no longer have a need for being +1 or +3, you can just have a ’Goblin Bane sword’ or something similar.
The benefits I see are that magical items feel a bit more magical again and you don’t need to ’dump out’ as much random generic magical armor or weapons to keep up with stat inflation. Plus, characters are more likely to hang onto a particular weapon or armor that feels right for their character, without the need to dump it just because they need to increase their bonuses.
But, I do see problems with it, as mentioned above. How should (or not) things stack?
So, turning to the folks here who play (and this can likely be done in 4e as well, since the bonuses seem similar, if not more necessary in 4e), what do you think? Is aiming for the idea of more ’magical’ magic a good thing? Too much work? Any flaws or ideas you all see?Pathfinder Familiar Magic Item Slots Free Play
The following table presents all of the animal companions and familiars available to characters, divided into general categories that loosely define their body type as well as which magic item slots are available to them. Available slots followed by either “(saddle)”. Small-sized familiars are also harder to keep on a master’s person than Tiny or smaller familiars. Often they require some form of magic item, like a bag of holding, for such a feat to work. The process of making a vermin into a familiar grants it an Intelligence score and removes the mindless trait.

The bomb was filled with 1,000 pounds of TNT, the letter explained, enough to not just obliterate Harvey’s but also to severely damage Harrah’s Casino across the street. It was equipped with. The bomb appeared early one morning in an upstairs office of Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Casino near Lake Tahoe, an enigmatic box covered in a bewildering array of switches. A neatly typed letter explained that the box contained 1,000 pounds of dynamite. Dwayne Kling, a retired Lake Tahoe and Reno casino executive, said Gross installed $385,000 worth of security equipment when Harvey’s was rebuilt after the attempt to defuse the 1,200-pound bomb. Harveys’ bomb remains a teaching tool for FBI more than 30 years after the blast In the early morning of August 26, 1980, three men dressed in blue worker’s coveralls wheeled an object roughly the size of a copy machine through a side entrance of Harveys Resort Hotel at Stateline, Nevada, perched on Lake Tahoe’s placid shores.Harvey’s Resort Hotel BombingLocationStateline, NevadaCoordinates38°57′37″N119°56′31″W / 38.9602°N 119.9420°WCoordinates: 38°57′37″N119°56′31″W / 38.9602°N 119.9420°WDateAugust 26–27, 1980TargetHarvey’s Resort HotelAttack typeBombing, attempted extortionWeaponsDeaths0Injured0PerpetratorsJohn Birges and three othersMotiveExtortionNevada State Fire Marshal Thomas J. Huddleston examining the bomb
The Harvey’s Resort Hotel bombing took place on August 26–27, 1980, when several men masquerading as photocopier deliverers planted an elaborately booby trappedbomb containing 1,000 pounds (450 kg) of dynamite at Harvey’s Resort Hotel (now ’Harveys’) in Stateline, Nevada, United States.[1] Blackjack ohare first appearance. After an attempt to disarm the bomb, it exploded causing extensive damage to the hotel but no injuries or deaths. The total cost of the damage was estimated to be around $18 million.[2] John Birges Sr. Bankroll for live poker. Sports gambling tennessee. was convicted of having made the bomb with a goal of extorting money from the casino after having lost $750,000 there. He died in prison in 1996, at the age of 74.Background[edit]
John Birges Sr. was a Hungarian immigrant to Clovis, California. He flew for the German Luftwaffe during World War II. He was captured and sentenced to 25 years of hard labor in the Sovietgulag. Eight years into his sentence in the gulag, he was released during a period of mass repatriation of POWs held in the Soviet Union to their home countries, and returned to Hungary. From there, he immigrated to the U.S. and built a successful landscaping business, but his addiction to gambling led to his losing a large amount of money and prompted the bomb plot.[3] His gambling debt and experience with explosives were primary pieces of evidence linking him to the bombing.[4]Bombing[edit]
As the mastermind behind the bomb, now-former millionaire Birges was attempting to extort $3 million ($9.3 million in 2019) from the casino, claiming he had lost $750,000 ($2.3 million in 2019) gambling there.
The FBI went to the spot that they believed to be the ransom drop, but due to vague directions, Birges was waiting at a different location. No money was paid to Birges.[5]
The bomb was cleverly built and virtually tamper-proof. The ransom note stated that the bomb could not be disarmed even by the bomb builder, but if paid $3 million he would give instructions on which combination of switches would allow the bomb to be moved and remotely detonated.[5] The FBI determined that it would take four men to move it and there was no way to know if the bomb was truly disarmed or safe to move. The FBI decided that the bomb would have to be disarmed in the hotel. All guests and staff were evacuated from the hotel and the gas main was shut off.[5]South Lake Tahoe Harveys Hotel
After studying the bomb for more than a day through x-rays, bomb technicians decided that, although there were warnings from the bomb maker that a shock would trigger the device, the best hope of disarming it was by separating the detonators from the dynamite. The technicians thought this could be accomplished using a shaped charge of C-4. The attempt to disarm the bomb failed as the technicians did not know that dynamite had also been placed in the top box containing the detonation circuit; the shaped charge detonated the top box explosives, which caused the rest of the bomb to detonate. The bomb destroyed much of the hotel, although no one was injured. Harrah’s Casino (which was connected to Harvey’s Resort via a tunnel) was also damaged by the explosion, which broke many of the casino’s windows.[6][7]
The bomb, one of the largest the FBI had ever seen, was loaded with an estimated 1,000 lb (450 kg) of dynamite stolen from a construction site in Fresno, California. According to FBI experts, the Harvey’s bomb remains the most complex improvised explosive device they have examined, and a replica of ’the machine’, as the extortionists called it, was still used in FBI training as of 2009.[1]Harvey Lake Tahoe Casino BombingInvestigation[edit]
Birges was investigated as a possible suspect due to his white van being identified as being in South Tahoe at the time of the bombing.[5] Birges was eventually arrested based on a tip.[8][9] One of his sons had revealed to his then-girlfriend that his father had placed a bomb in Harvey’s. After the two broke up, she was on a date with another man when they heard about a reward for information, and she informed her new boyfriend about Birges. This man then called the FBI.[6]
Birges was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.[10] In 1996, at the age of 74, he died of liver cancer at the Southern Nevada Correctional Center, 16 years and a day after the bombing.References[edit]

Both pay 2:1, but the odds of winning are only 32.43% and 31.58% for European and American Roulette, respectively. You may be thinking, “what if I bet on two columns, then I have a $64.8% chance of winning”. Here are the odds of getting 15 spins in a row without your Dozen/Column hitting: European Roulette: (25/37)^15 = 0.2793% – This works out at 1 in 358 chance. American Roulette: (26/38)^15 = 0.3372% – This works out at 1 in 296 chance. Roulette payouts are an important part of roulette strategy. They work like this. The odds are stated in the form of x to 1, which means you’ll win x dollars for every dollar you’ve bet. For example, the single number bet offers a payout of 35 to 1. If you win, you’ll get your dollar back plus the $35 for the win. The highest roulette odds (36 to 1) are for a single number bet and the lowest (1 to 1) are for outside bets like Odd/Even or Red/Black. Secondly, if you want to know what is the best bet for winning in online roulette, keep in mind that the European roulette odds to win are slightly better than those at the American table.
The Black and Red roulette strategy that you may read below is a very simple strategy, but still a very effective one. This system will be useful to all the players who do not possess a big money balance, unlike Martingale strategy which requires you to double all the bets you have lost. Here is how you need to carry out our black and red roulette system:
As the name of the system tells you, with this roulette strategy, you need to bet on black and red. The betting session starts with you placing a bet of $5 on a color of your choice. You need to continue to bet $5 on the same color until you lose two times in a row. If this happens, you will need to start placing bets of $10 until you either win two times in a row or you lose two times in a row. If you win two times in a row, you decrease your bet to $5. If you lose two times in a row, then you need to raise your bet to $15. The progression looks like this – $5, $10, $15, $20, $25, $30, $40, $50. This strategy may be carried out with initial bet of $1, as well, depending on the bankroll of the roulette player, and then the progression would look like this – $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $8, $10.
Outcasts of poker flat summary. As you will see for yourself, our black and red roulette strategy is very effective and you can win quite good with it.

What are the roulette odds of the ball landing in the same colour ten times in a row? What about landing on the same number twice? Let´s take a look, and then we´ll explain how this relates to the Gambler´s Fallacy, or the Monte Carlo Fallacy- the belief that the odds of a black number coming in increase, the more times you see red.
Let´s look at a European Roulette wheel. Over a single spin, the odds of a red number coming up are 18/37, or 1 in 2.06. Over 2 spins, the odds of 2 reds coming in are 1 in 2.06×2.06, or 4.24.
The odds of seeing 10 reds in succession are 1 in (2.06) to the power of 10 = 1 in 1376.

Pretty low odds that you´ll ever see this, in other words. But that doesn´t mean it isn´t going to happen. In fact, the longest number of reds in a row was recorded in an American Casino in 1943 when 32 came up in a row. Now imagine that you were betting the Martingale that day! The odds of seeing that are 1 in 11 million, or thereabouts by the way.
Another huge streak (this time on black) was seen by the players at the Casino in Monte Carlo who saw 26 blacks in a row on the table on 18 August 1913. The odds of this happening? A mere 1 in 145,000.
And this gave name to the Monte Carlo Fallacy, otherwise known as the Gambler´s Fallacy, as the longer the streak went on, more and more people started piling their chips on to red. And they lost a lot of money.
So what happened?Gambler´s Fallacy
The important thing to understand and to get your head around, is that these are odds over multiple spins. And here´s the thing. In roulette, you can´t bet on what is going to happen over 10 spins, you can only bet on the next spin. And thus the odds are always the same – 18/37, whether the red came in 10 times previously or not. The wheel has no memory from spin to spin. It is not a living thing.
Tip for Martingale Players
Martingale System Players are often susceptible to long runs as they double their bet after a loss. Start your first bet low if you employ this strategy to give yourself the most room for manouevre See The Martingale Strategy
You are Betting on One Spin Not Multiple Spins
When you are betting on one spin, the odds are for one spin, and for one spin only.Roulette Odds Red
One things for sure about the Gambler´s Falllacy- the casinos love it! Don´t get sucked in, keep your thinking hat on.
One thing’s for sure- there are plenty of people who have worked out that the odds are with the casino on roulette, and have opted to scam the casinos instead, like the roulette scam in Ohio. Just be warned- that’s illegal. They got busted. FAQs Roulette Probabilities
* What are the odds of seeing 10 reds in a row on a roulette wheel? The odds of seeing 10 reds one after another are 1 in (2.06)10 = 1 in 1376. But remember, you cannot bet on 10 spins, only on a single spin. Here the odds are 1 in 2.06
* What is the definition of the Gambler’s Fallacy in roulette? The Gambler’s Fallacy is the incorrect belief that a certain event like flipping a coin or the ball landing on a black number is more or less likely, due to a previous sequence of events.
This is incorrect for mutually exclusive events because each event is independent with a result that has no relation to past events. Think about it this way. Is the wheel thinking after each spin, “I spun a red last spin. Let´s throw in a black to even things up.” No. Roulette Odds BlackBetfair- Featured SiteOdds On A Roulette Table

*How to PlayBlackjack Rules ChartA unique combination of chance & skill
Blackjack Basic Rules and Strategies Blackjack Game Flow. Blackjack Plays: Insurance, Hit, Stand, Double, or Split. You then have two hands. A second card is dealt to each hand, and you play the hands separately (hitting, doubling, splitting, or standing as necessary). Some casinos restrict resplitting and doubling on splits. You will, however, need to equal your original stake on your newly split hand, so you will be betting double the original amount. There are a lot of variations and alternative rules which relate to splitting. Some of the most common include:. Allowing all cards with the same value to be split (i.e. A 10 and a Queen).
The popluarity of blackjack stems from its unique combination of chance and skill. The object of the game is to form a hand closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. At Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, blackjack is played with multiple decks of cards and is dealt from a shoe.Card Values
Face cards (Jack, Queen and King) are worth 10. Cards 2 through 10 retain their face values.
Aces are worth 1 or 11, depending on the hand. Any time an Ace can be used as either 1 or 11, it is called a soft hand. Any time an Ace must be used as 1 (or it would force your hand to exceed 21), it is called a hard hand.Playing Blackjack
Players place a wager in their corresponding circle. The dealer then waves a hand over the table, closing all bets. Once the first card is placed on the table, all original bets must remain the same until the conclusion of the hand. Two cards are dealt face-up to each player, and two cards (one face-up, one face-down) are placed in front of the dealer. The card dealt face down is known as the dealer hole card. What is a Blackjack
A hand of Ace and any 10-value card with the original two cards is called blackjack; it pays 3 to 2 (win $15 on a $10 bet). Poker bankroll risk of ruin calculator. The Hitting Round
Players can improve their hands by taking additional cards; this is known as hitting. If a player wants an additional card, they make a scratching motion behind or beside the betting area. A player may take cards until satisfied or until the hand exceeds 21—that is called a break. Once a player decides to stand (no more cards), a horizontal hand motion is made above their wager.
Important note: Dealers are not allowed to take verbal commands when addressing hands; a hand signal over the table must be given by each player.End Game
Once all players complete their hands, the dealer reveals the hole card, placing both cards face up. The dealer draws until a total of hard 17 or better is achieved. The dealer is required to hit a soft 17 or less regardless of players’ hand values. If the dealer breaks, all remaining hands win and are paid even money. If the dealer hits to a total of hard 17 or better, hands closer to 21 than the dealer win. Hands totaling less than the dealer lose. If the dealer and player have the same total, the result is a push: no one wins, no one loses.Easy Blackjack Rules
Important note: The player loses if the dealer has blackjack and the player has a total of 21, which is not blackjack.Insurance
If the dealer’s up-card is an Ace, players are offered insurance. Insurance is an additional wager betting that the dealer does indeed have blackjack. A player may wager up to half of the original bet by placing cheques on the Insurance Line. At this time, any player dealt blackjack can immediately be paid dollar for dollar on their wager by saying “even money,” regardless of the dealer hole card.
The dealer then closes insurance with a hand signal and checks the hole card. If the dealer does indeed have blackjack, insurance pays 2 to 1, and the hand is over. If the dealer does not have blackjack, the insurance wager loses and the hand continues. How to Split in Blackjack
If a player’s first two cards are of equal value, the player has the option of splitting them to create two separate hands. When splitting, an additional wager equal to the original bet must be made, and a hand signal (two fingers spread apart) must be given to the dealer. The player will play the first hand until satisfied, give a stand hand signal, and then complete the second hand. When splitting Aces, the player receives only one card for each hand.
Important note: When a split results in a hand consisting of a 10-value card and Ace, the value now counts as 21 since blackjack is only possible on the two original cards. How to Double Down in Blackjack
A confident player may wish to double down by making an additional wager up to the amount of the original bet. Doubling down can be done on any two-card combination, except on blackjack and split Aces. A player taking this option receives only one more card for the hand. All other rules apply.
And those are the basics of blackjack. Strategy cards are available at Sweet Grass Gift Shop for just a few dollars. They’re easy to use, and they’re allowed at the tables. For information on how to play other table games offered at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, just ask a member of our staff.
If you like blackjack, you might want to try Double Deck Pitch. It plays much like regular blackjack except the dealer operates with two decks of cards in-hand and the cards are dealt face-down.Blackjack Helpful Hints

— Zalambur
Zalambur is the proprietor of the Grand Sahil Casino and the owner of the Lily of the Elon, a luxury riverboat, in the Free City of Amnoon. A wealthy businessman and a well-known socialite with many connections, he is rumored to have deep ties to the Hamaseen criminal organization, but no solid proof has been presented to the authorities about it yet as many would-be witnesses would rather stay quiet than implicate him out of fear. There are also rumors that he may be a djinn.[1]
*1Biography
*3Story involvementBiography[edit]Early years[edit]
Zalambur’s early history is unknown, but he eventually became a wealthy and well-known businessman who operated the Grand Sahil Casino in the Free City of Amnoon. Thanks to his deep connections to the Hamaseen criminal organization, he received smuggled goods and information which increased his wealth and made him a prominent figure in the city and its politics. He built a luxurious riverboat known as the Lily of the Elon where he met with clientele and other persons of interest from nobility to people with connections to the criminal underground.
He was not afraid to use the Hamaseen’s network to advance his cause, using bribes, threats and even violence to make his point.[2] This earned Zalambur a controversial, legendary reputation among the citizens of Amnoon, some of whom admired him as a steadfast man while others were reluctant to implicate him to investigating authorities out of fear of reprisal from the Hamaseen. Many rumors spread about his influence and how he may have amassed his wealth, and these rumors eventually grew into legends about how he may be a djinn in human disguise.[1]
While the city council led by Chief Councilor Imann debated how to deal with Palawa Joko’s emissaries, Zalambur worked to undermine the emissaries’ efforts to annex Amnoon into the lich lord’s kingdom. During these visits he got acquainted with one of the emissaries, Archon Iberu, but did not hold the archon in high regard. He also spread bad word about the Amnoon council’s handling of the matter, earning supporters among some of the citizens.[1]Path of Fire[edit]
In 1330 AE, the rogue godBalthazar’s army invaded the desert and had an effect on trading with their blockades and raiding parties while also driving many inhabitants of the desert to flee to Tyria as refugees. Thanks to the Hamaseen, Zalambur was able to continue the smuggling business, however, and he seized an opportunity to strike deals with both the Consortium and the Black Lion Trading Company for the access of Tyrian goods in exchange for providing the trading companies with a network of customers.
Zalambur eventually learned of the Pact Commander’s arrival to Amnoon and that the Commander was after Balthazar. His attempts to win the Commander to his side were not as successful as he had hoped, however. Archon Iberu’s arrival complicated matters further as Iberu was displeased by Zalambur not doing enough to ensure Amnoon’s annexation into Joko’s kingdom.
Thanks to the Commander’s intervention, Iberu’s raiding party was stopped before they could destroy the casino. The grateful Zalambur used his contacts to find information that was of interest to the Commander: Balthazar’s Forged army was hunting for Vlast, one of the slain dragon prophet Glint’s scions who was viewed as a hero by the people of the desert. The information also revealed that Balthazar had been seen stopping at some of his raiding camps from time to time, so those would be good places to start looking for clues about the god’s current whereabouts and plans.Early Casino Proprietor Crossword
The Commander, who used Zalambur’s intel to continue the hunt for Balthazar throughout various locations in the desert, later had a choice to return to Zalambur for information about areas of interest with connections to Vlast. The Commander was reluctant to let Zalambur know everything, however, but managed to tell enough for the casino’s proprietor to reveal the location of Scholar Glokk who had also been asking similar vague questions in the Elon Riverlands.
Following Balthazar’s demise in the Battle of Kodash Bazaar, Zalambur was among the crowd welcoming the Commander back to Amnoon to celebrate the victory. While waiting for the Commander to give a speech, he conversed with Captain Ellen Kiel, the head of a trade delegation who had just arrived from Lion’s Arch, and found out that Ellen was a woman after his own heart. Zalambur suggested that he and Ellen should discuss business in private, leading to a beginning of what could be a mutually beneficial friendship or more. However, the celebration came to a sudden halt when a Brandstorm conjured by the Elder DragonKralkatorrik hit Amnoon.Living World Season 4[edit]
Although the initial Brandstorm was over quickly, another storm hit Amnoon soon after and brought with it a horde of Branded. Imann, Zalambur, and the Pact Commander’s allies from Kryta evacuated a number of civilians via airship while the Commander, local defenders and the dragonAurene fought off the invaders.[3] Following the attack on Amnoon, Ellen Kiel and Zalambur’s relationship blossomed into an affair. Ellen tried to keep it a secret, however, until Evon Gnashblade let her know that he was aware of the affair during the Festival of the Four Winds.[4]
Taimi reached out to Zalambur after Palawa Joko’s death in 1331 AE and asked him for a gift to give to the Commander’s dragon ally Aurene who had been agitated lately. Zalambur had not been able to consider the matter, however, because he had learned that some of his Hamaseen associates were planning to raid the Amnoon Water Authority and he wanted to stop it in order for Amnoon to have clean drinking water. He suggested that the Commander stop the Hamaseen in exchange for his help with Aurene.
Following the Commander’s successful mission, Zalambur revealed his reasons for acting against the Hamaseen: sometimes they became too enthusiastic and did not listen to reason, so he felt that they needed to be taught a lesson to plan for contingencies. As thanks, Zalambur sent the Luxurious Lily from the Lily of the Elon to decorate Aurene’s nest which Taimi was building in Sun’s Refuge.
When the Commander asked Zalambur about the mysterious deadeyeZafirah whose rifle had the Hamaseen mark on it, the casino proprietor feigned ignorance at first. However, he did let it slip that the rifle may have been a gift to loyal Hamaseen and that Zafirah may have once been a notable Hamaseen officer who had later left the organization for the Church of Balthazar.Early Casino ProprietorsLocation[edit]Crystal Desert

The early history of the city of New York’s vaunted theater district provides yet another illustration of how oft-repeated narratives become accepted truths. On the website of the New York Preservation Archive Project, we find the following:
“The Broadway Theater District originated in the early 1900s as theaters began to move from Union Square and Madison Square Garden further uptown to the Times Square area because of its cheaper real estate.”
We respectfully offer a much earlier date — October 21, 1882, opening night of the Casino Theater on the Southeast corner of Broadway and 39th Street — for the “birth of Broadway.” At least the Broadway as we know it today.
It was an inauspicious beginning. The Moorish revival theater’s roof was not-quite finished, and rain reportedly dripped onto the well-heeled audience’s elegant attire. In his 1913 memoir, theater manager Rudolph Aronson explained the rushed circumstances. First, there had been a hurried trip to Europe, where his efforts to associate known greats like Johann Strauss, Charles Gounod and Jules Massenet with the spectacular theater he was building in Manhattan had failed. Back in New York, he negotiated by cable for the rights to a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, to be performed by a large troupe under the management of the esteemed Maurice Grau (who later managed the Metropolitan Opera House), headlined by the French comedienne songstress Mme. Théo. The immensely popular Théo had never performed in America and was sure to draw a crowd.Early Casino Proprietorship
But the planned September 11th opening was impossible because of construction delays, and the entire troupe decamped to the rival Fifth Avenue Theater at 29th and Broadway. So Aronson resorted to John A. McCaull’s Opera Company. As the new opening date loomed, there were remaining issues, but as Aronson put it in his memoir: “McCaull… with a big, expensive company on his hands, insisted on opening…. and open I did!”
The production, The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief by Johann Strauss, was well received, but audience conditions were miserable. Aronson recorded: “during the entr’actes ladies and gentlemen tramped about the foyer to keep warm!”
After a few more performances, the Casino closed for further repairs, and the show reopened at the end of December. As per Kurt Gänzl’s Encyclopedia of the Musical Theatre, the Casino “quickly became established as the city’s leading house for quality musical theatre.”
McCaull parted ways with Aronson (and the Casino) two years later, but the McCaull Opera Company’s many 1880s productions, in New York and throughout the country, helped embed the musical comedy art form in American culture. So it seems long overdue to shine the spotlight on these two forgotten pioneers.
John McCaull
John A. McCaull was born in 1845, in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, a ferry-port town whose ancient Celtic inhabitants were sometimes referred to as “the Wild Scots of Galloway.” By 1861, 16-year old McCaull was living in South Carolina, and enlisted in a Confederate artillery regiment. Surviving records do not indicate he ever achieved a rank higher than Sergeant, but in his later persona as theatrical impresario, he was widely known as Colonel McCaull.
During the tumultuous post-Civil War period, McCaull served as a delegate for Roanoke County to the State House of Representatives from 1868 to 1870, edited a local paper and was involved in harness racing. Thereafter, he continued to migrate northward and took up the practice of law in Maryland.
One of his clients was Baltimore-based theatrical manager John T. Ford, whose Ford’s Theater in Washington. D.C. had been the site of Lincoln’s assassination. In 1879, McCaull came to New York where his client was producing Gilbert and Sullivan’s new opera, Pirates of Penzance, at the leased Fifth Avenue Theater.
McCaull was brought in to resolve a contractual dispute between Ford and the orchestra musicians. New York newspaper coverage of the settlement illustrates McCaull’s flair for rhetorical flourish and the beginnings of his mutual love affair with the New York press: “The Pinafore Orchestra Surrenders. The mutiny on board Her Majesty’s Ship Pinafore, Capts. Gilbert and Sullivan, has been quelled.”
The former soldier was introduced to the complicated art of production, balancing the concerns of dramatists, composers, theater owners, orchestra, and everyone in between. Step-by-step, an impresario was born.
By the next year, McCaull and Ford had both invested in the Bijou Opera House to be located on Broadway between 30th and 31st, which opened in March 1881. Early success was mixed, Ford returned to Baltimore, and McCaull bought him out.
In short order, the energetic McCaull brought out a number of notable productions, including La Mascotte, The Snake Charmer, and Olivette, which was his first major financial success. He also showed a gift for identifying such promising stars as Lillian Russell. Too small to be profitable, the Bijou was torn down by 1883.
Although it was replaced by a larger version on the same spot, McCaull had already invested in Rudolph Aronson’s Casino Theater further north.
McCaull was generally described as large, with arms befitting a prize-fighter. Press clippings from throughout the 1880s show a trail of litigation and occasional physical altercations. But commanding figures of musical comedy such as Russell and DeWolf Hopper later looked back gratefully on the opportunities afforded by Col. McCaull. For a flavor of his companions:
Hopper eventually married six times and was jokingly referred to as “the husband of his country”; Russell — who was described in her heyday as the epitome of feminine beauty — had only four husbands, but one of them was convicted of bigamy, for which he served time in an English prison.
In addition to his sometimes fractious and shifting theatrical family, McCaull had a real household in Baltimore to support as well. The 1880 Federal Census reveals “retired lawyer” John McCaull, his wife, Angela Monteiro, two small daughters, two teenage sisters, one traveling salesman brother-in-law and a single servant.
Rudolph Aronson
It’s difficult to imagine a less likely partner for McCaull than Rudolph Aronson. The German-Jewish Aronson family had emigrated from Prussia a few years before Rudolph’s birth in 1856. Rudolph showed musical gifts at a young age, and his memoir records his early fascination with opera.
The Academy of Music Theater was near his family home on 14th Street: “I, in company with my brother Edward, soon managed to form an acquaintance with the janitor of that then famous ‘Temple of Art,’ and two and sometimes three times a week the good-natured janitor smuggled us in through the stage, and, ascending the emergency staircase leading to the gallery, we heard there to our hearts’ content the works of Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Rossini, Gounod, and Ambroise Thomas.”
Aronson had the benefit of early tutoring by the famous Austrian pianist and composer, Leopold von Meyer, and spent three years (1874-1877) studying composition at the renowned Conservatoire National in Paris. Over the years, he published roughly 150 songs, waltzes and marches, including one immensely popular piece, “Sweet Sixteen” (1880).
Aronson was fascinated by showmanship. In the fall of 1877, shortly after his return from Paris, he began conducting a Sunday evening orchestra at Gilmore’s Garden (which became Madison Square Garden). At the time Barnum’s Circus occupied much of the open-air amphitheater.
Barnum called it, “the Roman Hippodrome.” Aronson set up with his fifty musicians on a platform in front of an improvised screen. The result was a whimsical melodic synergy between his music and the sounds of jungle animals on the other side of the screen.
While the Casino was clearly Aronson’s greatest creation, there was a pre

The Cash Game Variance Calculator. The best application out there today looks to be here. Let’s take a look at how the cash game calculator works. Here I want to use as an example a recreational player who works full time so only finds time for 25000 hands per month. This player has a decent win rate of 2.5BB/100.Not to be confused with BB/100 which is twice the BB/100 that you need to enter. Enter ’Win Rate’ and ’Standard Deviation’ in the same terms, usually big bets won per 100 hands (i.e BB/100) or dollars won per hour ($ per hour). Enter ’Risk of Ruin’ in percentage terms. Professional poker players with no other source of income would generally use a figure of 1% or less. For 10 hours of quarter play on 9-6 Jacks or Better, the bankroll for a 5 percent risk of ruin doesn’t quintuple from $165 to $825. Instead, it’s less than tripled, at $450, while the bankroll requirement for 8-5 Jacks rises to $570. Poker Bankroll Calculator. This poker bankroll calculator allows you to work out which limits you should be playing at in poker depending on how much money you have in your bankroll. This calculator is based around the rules of basic no limit Texas Holdem bankroll management, which are: You should have at least 20 times the buy in for cash games.
If you haven’t you definitely should.
The result is the risk of ruin with no limit on the number of hands and no quit point. Simply set the bankroll. Risk given no goal but a time constraint - This is the trip ruin formula in Blackjack Attack page 132. Risk is still calculated, but for a specified number of hands. The risk is lower than with the above calculator since you have a.

Can you spot it?
He risked his whole ‘bankroll’ on the table at once.
That’s suicidal in the poker world. You are almost guaranteed to go broke playing this way, no matter how good you are.
How we negate the risk of going broke to almost zero?
Well, bankroll management!
Forget all the complicated Holdem strategy and get the easiest part of the game right first!
Table Of ContentsBankroll Management And Why You Should Use it
All poker players, beginner or professional, should have an amount of cash which is ‘ring-fenced’ for poker use. The location of the cash isn’t significant; once you either have it on the poker site or a bank account which can be easily accessed.
If you are a new player this might mean depositing anywhere in between $50-$500 and hold your ‘roll’ on the poker site. You should deposit as much as you can afford in order to take advantage of first deposit bonus. These bonuses can oftentimes double your deposit or more depending on the poker site and deals available at the time.
A large bankroll is a buffer for a poker player – and building a bigger bankroll should always be one of your goals. It ensures that even during an extremely bad run of cards there are sufficient funds available to the player that he or she can keep playing despite the downswing. A bankroll is basically to the capital investment required to start a business and the cash flow required to keep it up and running.
If a business doesn’t have sufficient cash flow it will no longer pay its creditors as they fall due, and it will eventually go bust. A similar situation will occur with a poker player who doesn’t follow correct bankroll management: the swings, which are an inherent part of poker, will eventually catch up.
A bankroll is basically to the capital investment required to start a business and the cash flow required to keep it up and running. If a business doesn’t have enough cash flow it will no longer pay its creditors as they fall due, and it will eventually go bust. A similar situation will occur with a poker player who doesn’t follow correct bankroll management: the swings, which are an inherent part of poker, will eventually catch up.
What we will try to achieve with bankroll management is to reduce the chance that we will go broke due to bad downswings. In poker terms, that means reducing our risk of ruin.Basic Bankroll Management Strategy
That brings us to what is a good bankroll management strategy. Well, that is a very broad question and one I will try and answer in this post. But the main point to take home is that every player is different; thus their bankroll management strategy will vary accordingly. There is no clear-cut answer.
A very rough rule of thumb says that you should at least have 20 buy-ins (BI) for any stake that you will play. But this is the lower limit.
For example, if we wanted to play 100nl, we would require at least $2000 to reduce our risk of ruin to an ‘acceptable’ level. But the risk of ruin is also dependent on your win rate which makes pinning down an actual number quite difficult. The higher your win rate the lower your bankroll requirements should be.Variance Real Life Example
When you first begin to play poker it can be very difficult to understand variance is; and more importantly, what way it affects you as a poker player. An analogy for variance can be easily understood when thinking about the flipping a coin. Coins are for the most part unbiased: meaning that when you flip a coin there is an equal chance of landing on heads or tails i.e. 50% probability.
This is verifiable in real life. Flip a coin 10 times probabilistically you should get 5 heads and 5 tails, but that always won’t occur. You might get 7 heads and 3 tails, or you might even get all heads or tails. However, if you continued to flip the coin after 1,000, 10,000 or even 10,000,000 times you would find the percentage will converge towards 50% heads and 50% tails.
Nevertheless, over the short sample size of 10 flips variance plays a large roll and can sway the results in one direction or the other. This same ‘variance’ is also present in poker. Although is much harder to visualize because poker is a more complicated game.Variance Calculator
One way to begin to understand variance is by using a variance calculator such is found on pokerdope.com. On this website you will be asked to input a winrate, standard deviation (STD) and the number of hands:
*Winrate: we can assume a standard winrate of 3bb/100. For a 100nl game that would mean we are winning $3 for every hundred hands we play. Input your own winrate if you have it available.
*Standard deviation is a mathematical representation of how far from the mean a given sample may fall. The strict definition isn’t important, just the number. A low STD will tell us that we will experience smaller ‘swings’ in poker. For the 6max games, standard deviations are usually of the order of 80-100bb/100. Full ring games are slightly lower (see fullring vs 6max for more differences between the two formats).
*The number of hands – this is a simple one. We will keep it at 100,000 hands for the time being.
When these numbers are plugged into pokerdope.com we get the following:
This may look confusing but let me explain. The black line shows the expected winrate; however much like the coin example, there will be deviations from the expected over small sample sizes. And yes, 100,000 hands isn’t even considered a large sample in this case.
The 95% confidence interval is given by the dark green lines (95% our winnings after 100,000 hands would fall between these ranges). The light green lines show the 70% confidence interval. Looking at the 95% confidence interval we can see that a small percentage of the time we can lose almost 40 BI; in the case of 100Nl would be almost $4,000.
On the other end of the 95% confidence interval, we can sometimes win over $8,000. So for a normal winrate, with a typical STD over what would have been generally considered a large sample will provide a $12,000 range of winnings for the 95% confidence interval. Variance plays an extremely large bankroll in short term results we see as a poker player. The Effect Of Winrate On Variance
Well, what if we are to increase the winrate to double that of the original test. A winrate of 6bb/100 would be considered crushing for any stake above 5Nl.
It clear that the graph is quite different and has more of an upward slope. It also reassuring that after 100,000 the probability that we will lose is less than 3% of the time. However, the worst case scenario shows a large loss; although the probability of that occurring is very low. So it is clear that winrate has a big impact on how much ‘variance’ will affect our winnings. The larger the winrate the smaller the swings that will be experienced. The effect of sample size on winrate
Finally what will happen when we increase the sample size to 500,000 at 3bb/100 winrate:
So even after 500,000 hands (a massive sample) we still have a probability of losing of just under 2%. Most people never play that many hands in their life and if they do it will take years if not decades. However, the chance of losing after the sample is quite small.
It is clear that a larger sample size is better than a smaller sample size for reducing variance; however, its effect is not as large as is seen by an improved winrate. We increased the winrate by two fold and increased the sample size by fivefold and found a similar effect.
Key takeaway: Concentrate on improving your winrate as opposed to playing lots of hands. Stop mass multi-tabling and start working on your game! The risk of ruin
The risk of ruin is another way to quantify how many BI you need is using a risk of ruin calculator. If you enter your winrate, standard deviation as before and an acceptable risk of ruin you will find how many BI you need. Going broke and having no money to play with is any poker players worst nightmare; thus is it worthwhile getting used to using this calculator to understand and negate the risk.
To take our first example of 3bb/100 winrate with a standard deviation of 100 bb/100 we will get approximately a 5,000 bb bankroll or 50BI for a risk of ruin of 5%. For a professional that may be acceptable – but as always the larger the BR the better. If you were to choose a 20BI bankroll your risk of ruin will be greater than 25%; for a professional, this would be unacceptable and if they maintained their bankroll at this level (by withdrawing winnings) they would eventually come across a swing larger enough to make them go broke.
Moving up in stakes poses an issue for variance and is one of the reasons that moving up is so problematic for so many people. As we move up in stakes we will face higher quality players and less fish; as a result, or winrate will decrease. When our winrate drops we will experience more swings; couple the larger and more frequent swings with the fact that it is mentally demanding moving up to a higher stake (adjusting to the larger amount of money at stake). The net result: you will often find people getting stuck at a particular limit for a long period of time. The bankroll management strategy
So hopefully you now understand why bankroll management is required. However, as mentioned there is no ‘one fits all’ BRM strategy. Your BRM strategy depends on winrate, the stakes you play, how readily you can redeposit, your mental fortitude among many other variables. But there are a few general rules you can stick to in order to get you on the right track:
*Firstly, if you are not dependent on your poker income and you have a readily available source of income which can replenish your poker bankroll well then a much smaller bankroll of 15-20 BI would suffice. This is typical of a beginning player.
*Second, if you are dependent on poker income to pay bills you need to negate the risk of ruin to close to zero. Thus you will be required to have a much larger bankroll. A professional poker player, whose sole income is from poker is recommended to have at least 60BI for their bankroll and 6 months’ rent and other bills worth of savings. It is extremely difficult to play well on the poker table if you are worried about how you will pay your rent or food for the next month. Hence, if you are in that situation, ensure you are more than well covered. Some professionals have been known to have over 100BI of a bankroll just to be extra cautious.
*For a player who is in the early stages of their poker career, it is recommended that you use a 30-40BI rule when you cannot readily replenish your poker bankroll. This will ensure that you can keep a cool head even when things aren’t going your way. Playing good poker is easier knowing that you have a big buffer sitting in your account. The lower the potential you have for refilling your account, the larger your bankroll requirements should be.
This bankroll management strategy is only for cash games. For bankroll management strategies for other game formats, we would recommend reading how to calculate tournament bankroll requirements.Bankroll management strategy in actionBankroll Needed For Video Poker
Let’s take a couple of examples of good bankroll management (BRM) to drive home the point:
*“I am a beginner poker player and have less than $100 for my bankroll”: you should be looking to play the lowest stakes online. That means 2 or 5nl for cash games and 1$ or less ‘sit and go’.
*“I am a beginner but have some experience playing online and live. I have $500 for my poker bankroll”: restrict yourself to 10nl or less until you get more experience. If you are winning well at 10nl it won’t take long to move up. If you moved up to 25nl you are taking a big risk with the minimum of 20 BI which will leave you open to variance.
*“I am an experienced professional or semi-professional with $6,000 to invest in my poker bankroll and I have 10,000 in savings to cover bills for the coming months. I have no other source of income”: in this case, 100nl would be a good choice. This will give 60BI and leave plenty of room for any downswing which still having a healthy bankroll.Bankroll Management Tips
Here are a few bankroll management tips which can help you get your bankroll building as quickly as possible:
*Make use of deposit bonuses provided by different online poker websites. When you can double your initial deposit you will quickly build a big online roll. Note: the initial deposit requires unlocking through a certain amount of play.
*When going through a rough downswing it can be beneficial to drop down in limits (before your BRM says you should) in order to get your confidence back. Taken into account what we discussed, when we drop down in stakes our winrate will increase. This will decrease variance and get us back winning as soon as possible.
*Bankroll requirements for online are significantly less than for live play. Typically the smallest limit you will be able to find live is 100Nl or 200nl. This means a beginner who is following correct BRM strategy will require upwards of $2000-$4000. This isn’t always possible. Thus use online poker as a springboard to get into live play and build up a bankroll first. Note: Live winrates are typically much larger than online so bankroll requirements can be lower. Winrates of the order of 10bb/100+ would not be uncommon.
*Stick to your BRM strategy religiously. This means if you go below your minimum BI amount you must drop down in stakes. BRM is quite easy relative to some of the more complicated poker concepts; so make sure you get the easy part down first before you work on the more difficult aspects.

The main reason we need to use a bankroll management strategy is simply that variance plays a large bankroll in whether we win or lose in poker over small samples. Variance can make us believe that poker is like an ATM which keeps handing us money, or in other cases that we are so bad at poker, we can barely remember the hand rankings.
Keep variance under control by employing a well thought out BRM strategy which makes sense for you personally. A good BRM strategy will also be good for your mental poker game!Poker Bankroll Management
If you can rigorously employ your BRM strategy you will be building the foundations for the rest of your game to grow and prosper. Concentrate on working on your game as opposed to playing lots of hands; this will reduce variance and allow you to move up as quickly as possible.
If all that made no sense, here is a nice illustration with some rough bankroll management guideline to take you all the way up to 1kNL:

*Blackjack O’hare First Appearance DatesIntroduction to Wonging
The gambling strategy known as ‘Wonging’ has a wide and varied application, but it is most tightly related to the game of blackjack. Basically, it is practiced by players counting cards at one or several blackjack tables on the casino floor, and choosing the prime moment, based on their count, to enter the gameplay.Who Invented Wonging?
There is no saying who was the exact person that invented the Wonging strategy, as players have long been known to hop from table to table mid-game. However, blackjack author Jack Ferguson, better known for his alias Stanford Wong, largely propagated and developed this strategy in his publications, thus prompting people to name it after his pen name.
In 2014, BlackjackInfo conducted an interview with Stanford Wong which you can find here. The Basics
The wonging strategy can be viewed as a sort of a sub-type of card counting, as players count the cards at their chosen blackjack table(s), but without participating in the action. This allows players to keep track of the game flow and take a seat at the tables only when the count is favorable. Normally, they would occupy a less noticeable position that allows them full preview of the cards dealt, and stay there until the time is right.
Once the count is favorable…
… players take a seat at the table in order to make the most of it while the action is hot. This saves them the time and bankroll portion that they would otherwise have spent if they entered the action from the start. Cold periods with negative counts alternate with the positive ones and maintain some balance, but this particular strategy all but eliminates any possibility of staking your hard earned cash without getting a payout.
Nevertheless, beware…
… of appearing too conspicuous on the casino floor. Card counting as an activity in itself is frowned upon, and casino management are constantly on the lookout for any apparent behavior – fluctuations in bet sizes, sudden quitters from the table or signals to transfer information. As for wonging, players need to be additionally aware of the way they position themselves during table monitoring.Different Approaches
Across the massive number of books written on the topic, both from Ferguson and others, experts have shared various approaches to a successful wonging strategy.
Some ‘wongers’ tend…
…to act busy and fidgety since the moment they enter the casino, as if they have a plane to catch and the casino floor is just a by-way stop until boarding time comes. These tend to continue their busy appearance all throughout the surveillance period and during the actual gameplay at the blackjack table.
Other wongers, however…
… apply a sort of self sabotage. This needs to be done carefully, so that it doesn’t appear to be on purpose and used against the player’s interest. Most of the time, wongers enter the table at a peak time, play a few hands while the gameplay suits them and leave, but not before risking some of their winnings for the sake of keeping up appearances. They may double their bets after a win, or just increase them during a less advantageous count – either way it is something that throws management off for just enough time to make a getaway.Teaming Up
Wonging in teams is a third option to better practice this blackjack strategy. It can be done with the wonger – big player approach, or simply with a friend that can play along with the act just enough for the wonger to get the count. In the first case, the wonger is already at the table, sacrificing a portion of the bankroll throughout the less favorable periods, so that they can count the cards with utmost precision. Once suitable, they signal the ‘big player’ and once they enter the gameplay, the wonger conveys them the exact table count, normally using a code or association.
The latter team play option…
… would still require the wonger to do the card counting on their own, but it is much less conspicuous in the eyes of casino management. Once blackjack entered the big screen, relevant strategies portrayed there were commercialized and more widely applied, resulting in lower success rates.
… strongly supports this theory, as the characters doing the card counting would successfully work in teams of wonger – big player structures. Yet, even their timely demise indicates the need to be extremely attentive during such strategic plots.Advantages of Wonging in Blackjack
Using the wonging strategy in your blackjack gameplay has its perks and downsides. However, the fact that it is still practiced decades after being publicly explained is proof enough of its beneficial character.

*The Outcasts of Poker Flat On the morning of November 23, 1850, a gambler named John Oakhurst walks through Poker Flat, a small mining town in the American West. The town’s “moral atmosphere” has changed, and Oakhurst knows that the town is “after somebody.”.
The story takes place in a Californian community known as Poker Flat, near the town of La Porte. Poker Flat is, in the opinions of many, on a downward slope. The town has lost thousands of dollars, and has experienced a moral decline. In an effort to save what is left of the town and reestablish it as a ’virtuous’ place, a secret society is created to decide whom to exile and whom to kill. On November 23rd of 1850, four ’immoral’ individuals are exiled from Poker Flat and warned not to return on pain of death. The first of them is a professional poker player, John Oakhurst. He is among those sent away because of his great success in winning from those on the secret committee. On his way out of town, he is joined by two women, the Duchess and Mother Shipton, and Uncle Billy, the town drunk and a suspected robber. These four set out for the Sandy Bar mining camp, a day’s journey away over a mountain range. At noon, the group stops for a rest over Oakhurst’s protests.

The Outcasts Of Poker Flat Summary. Journey to further the characters change. Bret Harte is successful in using a physical journey to alter the characters personality in The Outcasts of Poker Flat. While on their rest, the group is met by a pair of runaway lovers on their way to Poker Flat to get married. Piney Woods is a fifteen-year-old girl. Her lover, Tom Simson, known also as ’the Innocent’, met Oakhurst before and has great admiration for him, as Oakhurst won a great deal of money from Simson. Oakhurst had returned the money and urged Simson never to gamble again, as he was a terrible player. Nonetheless, Simson is thrilled to have come upon Oakhurst on this day, and decides that he and Piney will stay with the group for a while. They do not know that the group is one of exiles, and Simson assumes that the Duchess is Oakhurst’s wife, to the amusement of Uncle Billy.
A decision is made for everyone to stay the night together, and they take shelter in a half-built cabin Simson has discovered. In the middle of the night, Oakhurst wakes up and sees a heavy snowstorm raging. Looking about, he realizes that Uncle Billy has fled with the group’s horses and mules. They are all now forced to wait out the storm with provisions that will likely only last for another 10 days. After a week in the cabin, Mother Shipton dies, having secretly and altruistically starved herself in order to give her rations to Piney. Oakhurst fashions some snowshoes for Simson to use in traveling to Poker Flat for help, telling the others he will accompany the young man part of the way. The ’law of Poker Flat’ finally arrives at the cabin, only to find the Duchess and Piney frozen to death and embracing in a peaceful repose. They look so peaceful and innocent that the onlookers cannot tell which of them had been exiled for her immoral behavior.
Oakhurst commits suicide under a tree by shooting himself through the heart with his derringer. A playing card, the two of clubs, is found pinned to the trunk with a note written on it:
BENEATH THIS TREELIES THE BODY OF JOHN OAKHURST, WHO STRUCK A STREAK OF BAD LUCK ON THE 23rd OF NOVEMBER, 1850, AND HANDED IN HIS CHECKS ON THE 7TH DECEMBER, 1850.Characters[edit]
*John Oakhurst
One of the story’s heroes, Oakhurst is occasionally frank but kind in motivation. He is chivalrous, insisting upon switching his good riding horse Five Spot for the mule of the Duchess and refusing to use vulgar language. He further shows his good nature by returning the $40 he had won from Tom Simson in a card game and saying, ’Tommy, you’re a good little man, but you can’t gamble worth a cent. Don’t try it over again.’ Oakhurst is not a drinker. He is cool tempered, even keeled and has a calm manner about him. He believes in luck and fate. His suicide spurs the question whether he was simply giving in to his bad luck or rather, decided he was no longer going to live by luck and took his life. The Outcasts Of Poker Flat Summary And Analysis
